Ramlu Baiga (right) and Aghni Bai with son Shiv Kumar, 9 months, and daughter Bhagvati, 8, outside their home in Indripani.

Ramlu Baiga, 33, and his wife Aghni Bai, 28, used to live in Bodhi Daldali which, since 2003, has been the location of a 668 hectare bauxite mine, run by Balco & Vedanta (Vedanta is a UK headquartered company). When the mine was established adivasi (tribal) Ramlu Baiga and his family were told to move. The Rs.100,000 they received per acre of land they used to own did not properly compensate them for their loss as they had legal rights over only 2.5 acres of the 17.5 they cultivated. Furthermore, Ramlu has to share compensation with his four brothers with each ultimately only receiving Rs.50,000. The Bodhi Daldali mine directly employs just 70 people. 750 contractors, most of them casual day-wage workers, provide the labour without which the mine would not function.
